A Close Call for the Nkuhuma Female Lionesses.
On Friday morning, June 28, 2024, we encountered two of the Nkuhuma female lionesses. They had separated from the rest of the pride, with the two Plains Camp male lions and the Nkuhuma third sister found further east, and were in a very precarious position!
The two lionesses had wandered dangerously close to a hyena den, approximately 200 meters from the sighting.
The highly protective and lion-averse scavengers wasted no time in pursuing the outnumbered lionesses. With at least five hyenas on their heels, the cats made a hasty retreat to the nearest refuge they could find – a fallen tree.
It was a very close call, and one of the lionesses sustained a bite to her right rear flank; if you look closely, you can see the puncture wounds.
Field Guide Geoff was on the scene and managed to capture incredible footage of the intense standoff between these two mortal enemies.
Thankfully, the lionesses managed to escape unharmed and later rejoined their sister as the Plains Camp males moved back to the west.
